The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed an application made by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for the release of his passport to enable him to travel overseas for medical treatment.
Emefiele’s defense counsel, Labi-Lawal, had requested the release of his passport for a medical trip to the United Kingdom, a request that was objected to by the EFCC.
In a statement issued by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, it was revealed that the prosecution counsel, Muhammad Omeiza, argued that there was no medical report before the court proving that Emefiele was suffering from an ailment and that there was no evidence to show that the treatment could not be administered locally in Nigeria.
The EFCC further contended that releasing Emefiele’s passport would amount to a variation of his bail conditions since he had deposited it as part of his bail requirements. The prosecution also raised concerns about Emefiele being a flight risk, pointing out that he had co-conspirators in various parts of the world, including the UK, who could aid in his escape.
The defense counsel dismissed these arguments as speculative, suggesting that an international red alert could be issued to ensure Emefiele’s return if he traveled abroad for medical treatment and did not come back.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the trial Judge, Justice Hamza Mu’azu, adjourned ruling on the passport application until July 16, 2024.
Emefiele is currently facing trial in three separate cases before different judges, including charges related to procurement fraud, forgery, alleged fraud amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion, and the approval of the printing of N684.5 million notes at the cost of N18.96 billion.
