A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Hon. Ross Agazuma, has shared the harrowing details of his escape from kidnappers along the Lagos-Benin highway. Agazuma, who also serves as the President of Youth Leaders for African Democracy, recounted the ordeal to journalists in Benin.
Agazuma explained that after his flight from Lagos to Benin was unexpectedly canceled, he opted to charter a vehicle from a transport company to attend PDP functions in Benin and Ubiaja on August 29. Unfortunately, the trip took a dangerous turn when his vehicle was ambushed near Ijebu-Ode.
He recalled, “I was supposed to fly to Benin, but when my flight was canceled, I rushed to the transport park to find another way. After chartering a vehicle, just past the toll gate at Ijebu-Ode, the driver noticed suspicious activity and tried to reverse. Before we could react, armed men emerged from the bush and surrounded the car.”
Agazuma narrated how the kidnappers shot the driver and attempted to abduct him. “They shot the driver, took all my belongings, and tried to drag me into the bush. I resisted and kept calling on Jesus. They threatened to shoot, but instead, they struck me with the butt of their guns.”
During the struggle, Agazuma said he managed to overpower his attackers and fled. “Out of nowhere, I felt a surge of strength, broke free, and started running. I spotted a Nigerian Army patrol van, but as I approached, they thought I was a robber and almost shot me. I quickly explained that I had just been robbed, and they stopped to help me.”
The soldiers then escorted Agazuma, allowing him to recover from the traumatic experience.
