Edo Governorship Election: IGP Enforces Movement Restrictions, Announces Emergency Hotlines

Ahead of the Edo State governorship election on Saturday, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has outlined strict security measures to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process, including the imposition of movement restrictions.

In a statement released by the Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP ordered the restriction of all vehicular movement, including on roads and waterways, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day. However, exceptions will be made for essential services such as accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders.

“To uphold the integrity of the election, the IGP has also banned all security aides and escorts from accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centres,” Adejobi stated. Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are also prohibited from operating during the election, with the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles strictly forbidden to maintain a calm atmosphere for voters.

In addition, the IGP has directed special accommodations for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges. He stressed the need for polling stations in both urban and rural areas to be accessible to all voters.

Through Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Frank Mba, who is overseeing the Edo gubernatorial election, the IGP urged citizens to avoid prank calls to the control room and election hotlines. Mba advised that text messages are more effective for reporting incidents or inquiries.

The designated contact numbers for election-related inquiries and reports are 07025000383 for DIG Frank Mba and 09085000029 for AIG Benneth Igwe. The general control room numbers are 08077773721 and 08037646272.

The police confirmed that a joint control room, staffed by the police and relevant agencies involved in the electoral process, has been activated to ensure coordination and prompt responses during the election.
