Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has raised concerns and made fresh allegations against the police and the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the upcoming governorship election in the state.
Obaseki accused the police of collaborating with the APC to arrest and intimidate members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State. The political atmosphere in the state has become tense as the election approaches, leading to various allegations and actions by politicians and their parties.
In a statement on Tuesday night, Governor Obaseki expressed his disappointment with the alleged intimidation by the police, stating that it is unacceptable for officers of the Nigeria Police Force to work in cahoots with the opposition party to unlawfully detain PDP members and incite conflict in the state.
He disclosed that there were plans to arrest several PDP stalwarts in an attempt to create chaos and disrupt the peace of the state during the electoral period.
Governor Obaseki highlighted a specific incident where the local government chairman of Esan West was arrested and taken to Abuja, undermining his authority as the Chief Security Officer of the State. He urged PDP supporters to remain calm and peaceful, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and the rule of law.
Furthermore, Governor Obaseki mentioned that the Inspector General of Police was expected to visit the state, and he intended to address his concerns with him directly.
He stressed the significance of maintaining peace and stability in Edo State, urging all parties involved, especially the police, to refrain from actions that could threaten democracy.
