Edo Catholic Priest Freed After 11 Days in Captivity.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Edo State, announced the safe release of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, who had been abducted during an attack at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary on October 27, 2024. The Diocese’s Director of Communications, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, confirmed that Fr. Oyode was released around 7 p.m. on November 6, near Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

Fr. Oyode was taken while he and seminarians were engaged in evening prayers and benediction at the seminary in Ivhianokpodi-Agenebode, Etsako East local government area. His abduction sparked widespread concern and calls for prayers across Catholic communities in Nigeria and abroad.

The Bishop of the Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, expressed deep gratitude to the Catholic faithful and others who offered support during the ordeal. He acknowledged the dedication of well-wishers, friends, and families who rallied around the Diocese with prayers and moral encouragement. He also recognized the efforts of security agencies, local vigilante groups, and hunters who mobilized extensively, working day and night to track Fr. Oyode’s whereabouts.

Bishop Dunia further urged the government to take decisive action to address the escalating security crisis in Edo North and other affected regions in the state. He highlighted the urgent need for measures to restore safety, allowing people to resume their daily lives, whether at home, on farms, or while traveling.
