Edo state, Nigeria–Ahead of the August 16, 2025 by-elections in Edo State, the State Police Command has mandated all candidates contesting for House of Representatives and Senatorial seats to sign a Peace Accord. The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, at noon, and will take place at the Police Command Headquarters in Benin City.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, described the initiative as a proactive measure to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process. He noted that the Peace Accord aims to promote mutual respect among candidates and discourage any form of political violence.
“The Peace Accord is designed to foster a climate of civility among candidates, dissuade acts of violence, and reinforce the principles of democratic engagement before, during, and after the polls,” the statement read.
Chairmen of the participating political parties have also been invited to the signing ceremony.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, urged all invited stakeholders to attend punctually, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining public order and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
He further appealed to political actors and their supporters to refrain from violence, hate speech, vote-buying, and any conduct that could compromise the credibility of the elections or disrupt the peace in the state.
