The ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) Task Force has called on the Republic of Benin and Niger Republic to set aside their differences and engage in dialogue to reopen their common frontier.
Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the Task Force Chairman, commended the efforts of former presidents of Benin, Nicephore Soglo, and Thomas Boni Yayi, in working towards normalizing the free movement of people and goods between the two countries, which had been disrupted since July 2023.
Chambas emphasized that allowing the free movement of persons and goods between Benin and Niger would alleviate the hardships faced by people in border communities, cross-border transporters, traders, and travelers.
He highlighted the recent high-level dialogue between the two countries, facilitated by the former presidents, as a positive step towards resolving the issues at hand.
The Task Force Chairman acknowledged the efforts of President of Benin, Patrice Talon, and the Nigerien delegation led by Gen. Mohamed Toumba in engaging in constructive discussions to find a resolution.
He praised the spirit of good neighborliness displayed by both countries and encouraged them to continue seeking solutions through dialogue within the framework of African brotherhood.
ETLS, established by ECOWAS to ensure the free movement of people and goods within the community, plays a crucial role in mediating disputes among member states and advocating for peaceful resolutions.
The Task Force reiterated the importance of cooperation and solidarity among member states in fostering Pan-African integration.
