ECOWAS Recognizes 12 West African Journalists for Ethical and Impactful Reporting

Abuja, NigeriaThe Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has awarded 12 journalists from across the region in recognition of their commitment to ethical and impactful journalism.

The awards were presented during a ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia, as part of activities marking the ECOWAS 50th anniversary and aligning with its Vision 2050 agenda. The event highlighted the critical role of the media in fostering peace, regional integration, and sustainable development.

The honoured journalists were commended for their dedication to promoting unity, democratic values, and active civic engagement through their work.

In her opening remarks, ECOWAS Resident Representative to The Gambia, H.E. Mrs. Miatta Lily French, praised the awardees for their creativity and bravery. “Their voices carry the vision of the region’s future,” she noted, emphasizing the media’s influence in shaping public discourse and regional cohesion.

Representing the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Director of Cabinet Abdoul Kolley delivered a goodwill message reaffirming the Commission’s strong belief in the media as a catalyst for democratic consolidation and inclusive governance across member states.

The 2025 Regional Media Awards served as a major highlight of the ECOWAS golden jubilee celebrations, reinforcing the bloc’s enduring commitment to collaborating with the press in building a more informed and united West Africa.
