ECOWAS Parliament hold emergency session over Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament is to convene an Extra-Ordinary Session on Saturday to address the recent political developments in the Republic of Niger.

The Communications Division of the Parliament has released a statement disclosing that the session will take place virtually.

According to the parliament, numerous ECOWAS member states have been spurred to take decisive actions towards achieving peace and security by fostering democracy and good governance since the early 1990s.

This drive was catalysed by significant changes that transpired in the politico-economic landscape of the world during the late 1980s, the statement explained.

“Thus, the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance came into force in 2001, marking an important stage in the sub-region’s political development,” it added

The upcoming parliamentary session anticipates the participation of all 115-member parliamentarians.

They are expected to engage in deliberations focused on identifying potential solutions to halt the persistent breaches of the statutory provisions outlined in the ECOWAS constitution by certain member states such as Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and most recently, the Republic of Niger.
