ECOWAS Initiates Resilience and Security Assessment in Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a comprehensive resilience and human security assessment across its member states.

Mr. Chris Ngwodo, the Director General of Nigeria’s Office for Strategic Preparedness and Response, announced that this initiative aims to enhance understanding of security dynamics and trends, thereby identifying and bolstering resilience to support human security in the region.

Ngwodo outlined the project’s goal to map human security vulnerabilities and resilience factors. “We aim to understand the complex issues underlying conflicts and instability in Nigeria, map resilience factors that can aid in addressing these issues, and gather empirical data to inform government policy interventions,” he stated.

The assessment team will visit conflict hotspots and areas that have demonstrated resilience to violence in the past to analyze the factors contributing to their stability.

This project is a collaborative effort involving the ECOWAS Directorate of Early Warning, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience.
