The Ebonyi State government has awarded a contract worth over N13 billion for the rehabilitation of the runway at Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Onueke.
At the site, the Commissioner for Aviation, Transport, and Technology, Dr Ngozi Obichukwu, said the runway had been redesigned to enhance the smooth landing of all categories of aircraft.
The airport has one of the longest runways in the country, measuring 3.1 kilometres in length by 75 metres in width and constructed with 14 inches of reinforced concrete pavement.
However, Dr Obichukwu said no aircraft had landed at the airport for two months due to the condition of the runway, stressing that the contract was for the replacement of its concrete surface with asphalt.
A representative of the contracting firm, Yusuf Zrebb, assured the Ebonyi government that the project would be delivered within eight months and in line with laid-down specifications.
