Abuja, Nigeria— The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised public awareness following confirmation of a fresh Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to the DRC’s Ministry of Health, as of September 4, 2025, 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including four health workers, have been reported in Kasai Province. The outbreak has primarily affected Bulape and Mweka health zones, with patients showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and bleeding.
Laboratory tests at the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa confirmed the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus as the cause, with a case fatality rate estimated at 57 percent.
Reassuring Nigerians, the NCDC emphasized that no Ebola case has been detected in Nigeria. However, it noted that surveillance has been intensified at points of entry while infection prevention and control measures are being strengthened across health facilities.
The agency added that risk communication and community engagement systems have also been activated to counter rumours, misinformation, and fear.
Ebola virus disease, formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe illness with a fatality rate ranging between 25 and 90 percent. The virus has five known species—Bundibugyo, Reston, Tai Forest, Sudan, and Zaire, the latter being responsible for the current outbreak.
