The Democratic Republic of Congo is set to reduce restrictions in two conflict-hit areas that have been placed on martial law for two years.
In a television address on Thursday night, President Félix Tshisekedi said the move would be gradual and progressive in the eastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri.
The announcement is coming few months to the country’s elections where the President is seeking re-election.
According to him, the gesture became imperative to allow those involved in the country’s electoral process have unhindered movement for effective participation.
President Tshisekedi maintained that all imposed curfews would be relaxed to allow free flow of human and vehicular movement as well as restore people’s right to peaceful assembly.
