The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has labeled reports of the abduction of 500 people in Zamfara State’s Zurmi local government area as fictitious.
Major-General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated on Friday that only four people were actually abducted from the community, contrary to the exaggerated reports.
Buba explained that troops of Operation Hadarin Daji are engaged in a complex combat environment against a ruthless enemy, dealing with both on-ground realities and misleading social media narratives.
“The virtual reality, especially on social media, often involves fictitious figures and extreme exaggerations,” Buba said. “For example, the claim of over 500 people being abducted by terrorists is a gross exaggeration. In reality, troops have confirmed that only four people were abducted.”
He also cited a similar instance during the Kuriga abduction, where the reported numbers were significantly higher than the actual figures.
Addressing concerns about troop rotations and overstayed deployments, Buba noted that the current military leadership has prioritized these issues to enhance troop welfare and administration. He emphasized that troops remain determined and focused on defeating terrorists and their allies.
Buba acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve cooperation with the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards and secure citizens, especially as the rainy season begins. He highlighted that many terrorist leaders have been eliminated and that the military is in a strong position in the fight against terrorism.
“There is still a lot of work ahead to better secure citizens and protect them from acts of terror,” he added, noting that some operational details remain undisclosed for security reasons.
