Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Praises Senate President Akpabio for Advancing South East Development Commission Bill

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has expressed appreciation to Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for his pivotal role in advancing the South East Development Commission Bill to the third reading in the Senate.

Addressing attendees at a homecoming reception for the Senate President in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Kalu, who stood in for Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, hailed Akpabio’s support for the bill, emphasizing its potential to address the lingering aftermath of the Nigerian civil war once endorsed by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu also lauded Akpabio for fostering unprecedented collaboration between the Senate and the House of Representatives, underscoring the significance of his leadership approach in promoting synergy between the two chambers.

Expressing gratitude for Akpabio’s backing of the South East Development Commission bill, Kalu highlighted the bill’s strategic importance in providing long-awaited reconciliation and rehabilitation for the Southeastern region, which has endured decades of unmet post-civil war needs.

He remarked, “Your support is genuine and sincere. You’ve exemplified the fact that though we are three arms of government, we are one government with one national objective,” while acknowledging the hope ignited by the prospect of presidential assent to the bill, which has instilled a sense of optimism and peace in the Southeast.
