Abuja, Nigeria — The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has pledged unwavering support for policies and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in Nigeria.
Mr. Kalu made this commitment during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, and the Provost of the Postgraduate School, Professor Enyong Ubana, at his office in Abuja.
Highlighting the dedication of the 10th National Assembly to educational advancement, the Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of fostering programs that elevate academic standards across the nation.
Reflecting on his time as a student at the University of Calabar, Mr. Kalu praised the institution for instilling values such as diligence, competitiveness, and patriotism, which he credited for shaping his character and contributions to nation-building. He also revealed that his interactions with exceptional students from the university inspired him to sponsor awards to encourage young law students.
In recognition of his achievements and contributions, Mr. Kalu was decorated as an ambassador of the university by Professor Florence Obi. The Deputy Speaker, who is currently pursuing a doctorate in law at the institution, vowed to uphold the values and discipline imparted by his alma mater.
In their remarks, Professor Florence Obi and Professor Enyong Ubana lauded Mr. Kalu as a remarkable asset to the university and the nation. They described him as a source of pride for his legislative accomplishments and leadership.
The delegation also used the visit to brief the Deputy Speaker on the upcoming 50th anniversary and convocation lecture of the University of Calabar. They formally informed him of his selection as the guest lecturer for the prestigious event.
