The Nigerian Police Force has issued a stern warning against violent protests ahead of the country’s Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday, June 12.
Acknowledging the right of Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests, the police emphasized that any criminal acts, such as tampering with the national grid or disrupting critical infrastructure like airports and hospitals, would not be tolerated.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, stated that individuals aiming to disrupt critical infrastructure would face severe legal consequences, as such actions constitute economic sabotage and treasonable felony.
In response to potential threats, ACP Adejobi revealed that Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has instructed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and State Command Commissioners to collaborate with other security agencies to maintain law and order. This will involve strategic deployment of personnel and necessary resources to safeguard key infrastructure and ensure protests remain peaceful and lawful.
He urged those planning to protest to notify the police to receive appropriate protection, asserting that no decent society would tolerate the violent destruction of lives and properties under the guise of protests.
ACP Adejobi assured Nigerians that the police are committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, including peaceful protesters, and will not allow anyone’s rights to be violated during mass demonstrations.
In related news, President Bola Tinubu will address the nation on Wednesday, June 12, at 7 AM, in a broadcast to commemorate Democracy Day.
