Delta LG Commission Identifies Ghost Workers in Staff Audit

Delta state, Nigeria: The Delta State Local Government Service Commission has uncovered multiple cases of ghost workers through a recent staff verification exercise, according to its Chairman, Dr. Joseph Otirhue.

Speaking during a press briefing in Asaba, Dr. Otirhue disclosed that numerous employees who had relocated overseas without formally resigning were still receiving salaries. He confirmed that such individuals have since been removed from the payroll.

“Earlier this year, we carried out a comprehensive verification to distinguish between staff who are actively reporting for duty and those who are not. It is unsustainable for the government to continue paying salaries without commensurate service delivery. The audit has led to significant financial savings for local councils,” he said.

In addition to absentee workers, names of deceased staff, retirees, and individuals implicated in misconduct were also eliminated from the system. “Those who have left the country and failed to return are no longer on the payroll. Our guiding policy is clear: no work, no pay,” he emphasized.

Dr. Otirhue stated that local government chairpersons have been fully briefed on the audit’s findings, which he described as both necessary and impactful. He reiterated the Commission’s core mandate, which includes recruitment, promotions, disciplinary oversight, and staff development.

He also highlighted ongoing training initiatives designed to enhance the performance and efficiency of local government personnel. “Knowledge is empowering, and we are already witnessing improvements in service delivery as a result,” he said.

Underscoring the importance of local government workers in grassroots governance, Dr. Otirhue described them as essential actors in policy implementation and administrative effectiveness.

He noted that the Commission maintains a strong and cooperative relationship with local council chairpersons, describing it as “robust, cordial, and people-focused.”

Dr. Otirhue concluded by commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s achievements since taking office in May 2023.
