Delta Govt OKs ₦6.7bn for Education, Infrastructure

Delta state, Nigeria: The Delta State Government has approved the release of ₦6.7 billion as its counterpart contribution to access the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grant, aimed at bolstering basic education infrastructure across the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Works (Rural and Public Infrastructure), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, during a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba.

According to Aniagwu, the counterpart funding will enable the state to leverage matching grants from UBEC for the construction, renovation, and equipping of public schools to enhance the delivery of basic education.

In addition to the education-focused initiatives, the Council also approved the procurement and installation of technical equipment at Omadino Technical College and Model Technical College, Oghara-Efe, as well as the development of critical facilities—including hostels, dining areas, and workshops—at the new Model Technical College in Akugbene.

A contract review for the ongoing Model Technical College project in Irri was also approved, along with the construction of a 12-unit residential block at the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Asaba and the concessioning of the Issele-Uku Garment Factory and Skill Acquisition Centre.

Governor Oborevwori has further directed the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to assess and report on the infrastructure and furniture needs of schools across the state to inform future interventions.

Meanwhile, the State Executive Council sanctioned several road and utility projects aimed at improving connectivity and power supply in underserved areas. These include the reconstruction of failed portions of the Uzere–Asaba-Ase Road, and the construction of a 100-meter bridge on the Aboh–Akarai concrete road across the Okiri River in Ndokwa East.

Additional projects include the Eku–Osubi and Okpanam–Ugbolu roads; the extension of electricity and installation of six transformers in Orugbo, Ode-Itsekiri, Ajigba, Inorin, Usele, and Ugbodede communities in Warri South Local Government Area.

Other approved infrastructure projects span across the state and cover the Ovrode–Aradhe Road Phase 1, access roads in Okpolo-Enhwe, and internal road networks in Atuma-Iga, Ughelli, Ekiugbo, and Warri South. The Executive Council also ratified road rehabilitations and upgrades in Ethiope East, Patani, Amukpe, Torugbene, Ekpan, Okpanam, and Mosogar.

Aniagwu noted that these interventions reflect the strategic objectives of the Governor’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, which centers on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security—particularly through investments in infrastructure and human capital development.
