Davido Reflects on Son’s Death as Turning Point in Life and Career

Lagos, NigeriaAfrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about how the tragic loss of his son, Ifeanyi, in 2022 marked a defining moment in both his personal life and professional journey.

Ifeanyi, who was just three years old at the time, tragically drowned in a swimming pool at Davido’s Banana Island residence in Lagos in October 2022.

Speaking during an interview with ABC News’ Rocsi Diaz — which began trending on Wednesday — the award-winning artist said he was proud of how he and his wife, Chioma, navigated the grief and found strength to move forward.

“That experience reshaped everything,” Davido shared. “Stepping away after losing my son and being able to look back on my career gave me a refocus on how I wanted to move forward. It changed my life.”

He noted that their resilience during the difficult period has served as a source of inspiration to many. “I know how many people randomly — like in airports — come up to me and say, ‘Bro, you don’t know how your strength has gotten me through life,’” he recounted.

Davido added that the couple’s ability to overcome such a devastating loss and build a new chapter, now as parents of twins, has been a profound source of pride. “Me and my wife were talking the other day, and I said, ‘I’m proud of us.’ We went through that and bounced back in a major way. It’s huge.”

The couple recently celebrated their union with a lavish wedding ceremony held in Miami.
