The Nigeria Customs Service’s Operation Whirlwind arm has intercepted smugglers operating around the international borderlines of Adamawa and neighboring Cameroon Republic, confiscating a total of 41,425 litres of petrol.
The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, revealed this during a press briefing in Yola, stating that nine vehicles used by the smugglers to transport the contraband were also seized in the process. The seizures took place between May of this year and the present time.
Ejibunu disclosed that the recent seizure included 1,481 jerry cans and 20 drums containing 25 litres and 220 litres each, respectively, amounting to the total of 41,425 litres of petrol.
The contraband was hidden in different brands of cars with petrol-carrying tankers and concealed by heavily tinted windscreens. The cumulative duty value of the seized items was estimated at N48,547,500.
The seizures occurred at various locations including Mubi-Sahuda road, Girei-Wuro Boki axis, Maiha road, Angwan Tana-Bajin Kogi axis, among others.
Customs operatives, working in conjunction with the National Mass Development and Poverty Reduction Agency (NMDPRA), are monitoring the supply and distribution chain from loading depots to retail outlets to ensure that petrol reaches its designated destinations without any illegal activities.
