The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have launched a five-day workshop to enhance the understanding of African Customs officers on the rules of origin, a critical aspect of trade facilitation and regulatory compliance across the continent.
Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, Caroline Niagwan, emphasized the significance of this training in advancing intra-African trade and fostering regional economic integration. She described it as a vital step towards boosting the continent’s trade capacity and economic development.
Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada highlighted that the workshop is part of ongoing technical support from WCO and JICA, aimed at increasing trade efficiency among African Customs administrations.
Faith Mathenge, a rules of origin expert, underscored the workshop’s potential in unlocking new trade opportunities. She also commended Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for prioritizing capacity building, which she said is crucial to the sector’s advancement.
The training includes practical sessions on the certification process essential for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocols, aiming to streamline trade across the region.
This collaboration between WCO, JICA, and African Customs administrations demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening Africa’s trade systems and underscores the importance of international partnerships in fostering sustainable economic growth across the continent.
