Customs Earns ₦3.57bn, Exports 220,300MT via Seme Border

Seme-Krake, NigeriaThe Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has recorded significant strides in revenue generation, export facilitation, and anti-smuggling operations despite persistent infrastructural setbacks.

This was revealed by Comptroller Ben Oramalugo during the visit of the Assistant Comptroller General, Zone A, Charles Orbih, to the ECOWAS Joint Border Post, Seme-Krake.

According to Oramalugo, the Command generated over ₦3.57 billion in revenue and facilitated export consignments totaling 220,300 metric tonnes valued at ₦47 billion Free on Board (FOB) between January and May 2025.

Highlighting the Command’s enforcement efforts, he noted the seizure of contraband goods worth ₦889 million, which included expired pharmaceuticals, marijuana, and mercury. These were handed over to appropriate security agencies for further action.

Compt. Oramalugo expressed concern over operational challenges, such as non-functional scanning equipment, over seven years of continuous power outages, poor road infrastructure, and a porous border environment. He emphasized that the Command is advocating for infrastructure upgrades, the introduction of modern surveillance technology, and stronger inter-agency collaboration.

In his address, ACG Charles Orbih commended the Command’s proactive leadership and lauded recent infrastructure projects, including the renovation of the COWA building, upgrading of the sports complex, and commissioning of an officers’ mess. These initiatives, he noted, reflect the transformation agenda of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, centered on Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovation.

Orbih further acknowledged the pivotal role of Zone A in national revenue generation, disclosing that the zone accounted for 79.8% of the NCS’s ₦1.3 trillion revenue collected in the first quarter of 2025. He also reaffirmed the Service’s modernization drive, citing the Advance Ruling System, the Authorized Economic Operators (AEO) programme, and the locally developed B’Odogwu Customs Clearance platform as major milestones.
