Abuja, Nigeria–A coalition of civil society organisations under the United Action for Democracy (UAD) has condemned the arrest of Ramzy Abu Ibrahim, a leader of the Palestinian community in Nigeria, by operatives of the anti-terrorism unit in Abuja.
The group has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure his immediate and unconditional release, citing violations of due process and international human rights standards.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday and signed by UAD Executive Director, Kunle Ajayi, the coalition criticised what it described as the unlawful abduction of Palestinian leaders in Nigeria. The group warned against Nigeria becoming entangled in the Middle East conflict, urging the federal government to maintain neutrality and uphold the nation’s sovereignty.
“Nigeria cannot afford to be drawn into the ongoing Israel-Palestine crisis, especially while contending with a fragile economy, security concerns, and internal socio-political challenges,” the statement read. The coalition further urged Nigerian authorities to respect the rights of Palestinians residing in the country, ensuring they are not subjected to harassment, political persecution, or intimidation.
Additionally, the CSOs called for a review of any bilateral agreements with Israel that could compromise Nigeria’s independence or democratic values, stressing that Nigerian institutions should not be used to suppress legitimate calls for justice, peace, and dignity in Palestine.
Organisations endorsing the statement include the All Workers Convergence, Lagos State Liberation Congress, Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, Centre for Human Rights Advocacy, Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence, Peace Initiative for Better Nigeria, and the Youth League Academy.
