CSOs Condemn State of Emergency in Rivers, Demand Reversal

NigeriaA coalition of over 200 civil society organizations under the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State

The group argued that the decision exceeded constitutional authority, undermined federalism, and violated the Nigerian Constitution, setting a dangerous precedent for future undemocratic actions.

The coalition warned that such moves could embolden leaders to subvert democracy for personal or political gain. They called for an immediate reversal of the declaration and a public apology from the President. The group also urged the National Assembly and Judiciary to uphold constitutional governance and prevent future violations.

President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, citing constitutional violations, demolition of the state House of Assembly, and failure to restore democratic order despite Supreme Court rulings. The declaration has generated mixed reactions, with the Senate and House of Representatives approving the state of emergency while calling for a National Peace and Reconciliation Committee to mediate the political crisis.
