Court Sentences Singer Timileyin to Death for NYSC Murder

Lafia, NigeriaThe High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging following his conviction for the brutal murder of 26-year-old Salome Adaidu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

After months of trial, the presiding judge, Justice Simon Aboki, found Timileyin guilty of culpable homicide, ruling that the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused intentionally killed and dismembered the victim.

Justice Aboki referenced Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which mandates the death penalty for culpable homicide, stating, “The evidence before the court clearly shows that the accused intentionally caused the death of the deceased. The law is clear on this, and the punishment is death.”

Timileyin, once a celebrated gospel singer and fitness enthusiast, was arrested after being caught with the severed head of Adaidu. He was found near a church in the Orozo area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), carrying a black nylon bag with flies following him. Social media videos circulated showing his unusual behavior.

The suspect, originally from Kabba in Kogi State, explained that a heated altercation with his girlfriend led to her attempting to stab him, prompting him to kill and mutilate her body. However, his defense was rejected by the court.

This verdict highlights the severity of the crime and the consequences for such acts of violence.
