Court issues summons to Vice Chancellor of UniAbuja over council crisis

Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Rasheed Na’Allah, to appear before it on June 13 to provide reasons why the planned inauguration of the newly elected Internal Governing Council Members of the university should not be halted.

Justice Inyang Ekwo issued this order following an ex-parte motion presented by the plaintiffs’ counsel, Maxwell Opara. The plaintiffs in this case are Prof. Saint Gbilekaa, Prof. Edmund Nwanna, Prof. Sunday Ejaro, Prof. Kasim Umar, Prof. Wesley Nafarnda, and Dr. Uju Patrick.

The aggrieved lecturers had filed a motion seeking various reliefs, including an interim injunction to maintain the status quo ante bellum until the determination of the matter on notice. They also requested an injunction to restrain the VC and others from conducting the inauguration of the newly elected internal council members of the university.

The court granted the plaintiffs’ motion, ordering them to notify the defendants of the ex-parte motion within three days and scheduling a hearing for June 13. The judge emphasized that the defendants must show cause regarding the prayers of the plaintiffs’ motion ex-parte on the next hearing date.

The case revolves around the conduct of an election for the University of Abuja’s Governing Council by Prof. Rasheed Na’Allah, which the plaintiffs argue was unlawful. The court will further examine the matter and determine the appropriate course of action following the upcoming hearing on June 13.
