A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the planned state congress and elections set for Saturday, September 21, 2024. The decision will remain in effect pending the hearing of a motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction.
This ruling follows an ex parte application filed by five dissatisfied members of the PDP in Kaduna State. The plaintiffs, Nura Waziri, Muntari Shuaibu, Yusuf Suleiman, Mallam Mansur Alasan, and Jaafaru Abubakar, had petitioned the court to halt the elections.
Represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) M.A. Mahmud, the aggrieved members sought the court’s intervention through their legal counsel. In a letter dated September 18 and addressed to the INEC chairman, Mahmud requested that the electoral commission refrain from participating in or monitoring the congress until the legal matter is resolved.
