The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja has issued a temporary restraining order on MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, preventing the company from raising its tariffs and the costs of its products and services that were set to take effect on May 1st. The three-member tribunal, headed by Saratu Shafii, granted the interim order after an ex-parte motion was presented by Ejiro Awaritoma, representing the applicant, Festus Onifade.
The tribunal’s ruling prohibits MultiChoice from moving forward with the planned price hike slated to commence on May 1st until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice. Shafii stated, “The 1st defendant is hereby prohibited from taking any action that could adversely impact the rights of the claimant and other consumers regarding the case, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”
All parties involved in the case are required to appear before the tribunal on May 7th at 10 a.m. for the hearing and resolution of the motion on notice. Festus Onifade had filed a lawsuit against Multi-Choice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) before the tribunal under the case number CCPT/OP/2/2024.
