The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed an application seeking to halt ongoing protests organized under the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria. The application sought an interim injunction to restrain protesters from continuing their demonstrations across the country.
The motion, filed on August 12, 2024, by Danladi Goje, Buky Abayomi, Adiza Abbo, and 13 other Nigerians, aimed to protect their fundamental rights against various organizations associated with the protests. The applicants named several groups, including the Take It Back Movement, Concerned Nigerians, Nigerians Against Hunger, and Initiative For Change, as respondents.
Additional respondents included Active Citizens Group, Students For Change, We Coalition, Total Intervention, and prominent individuals such as Omoyele Sowore and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The Attorney General of the Federation and various security agencies were also listed in the case.
The applicants’ lawyer, Tsembelee Sorkaa, argued that the ongoing protests, which are organized by the respondents, could infringe on the rights to life, personal liberty, and property, among others. He also cited the #EndSARS protests of 2020, which resulted in loss of life and property, as a precedent for potential harm.
However, Justice Lifu, who presided over the case, ruled that there was no evidence that the protests would resume, noting that the demonstrations had already ended the previous week. The judge determined that the motion lacked merit and dismissed it.
The court has scheduled a hearing on the motion on notice for August 29, 2024.
