Court Defers Natasha’s Case Against Senate to March 25

Abuja, Nigeria —  The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Obiora Egwatu, has postponed the hearing of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal challenge against the Senate until March 25, 2025.

Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, had approached the court to halt the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her. Despite an earlier court ruling, the Senate proceeded on Thursday to suspend her for six months after reviewing the committee’s findings.

During Monday’s proceedings, legal representatives of the first, second, and third defendants claimed they had not received the necessary court documents. However, Natasha’s counsel, Michael Numa (SAN), countered this assertion, confirming that all parties had been served, with supporting affidavits submitted to the court.

In response, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, counsel to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, requested an adjournment to allow for the consolidation of all legal processes.

Justice Egwatu granted the request and scheduled the next hearing for March 25, 2025, instructing that all relevant documents be properly served before the adjourned date.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the Senate enforced its six-month suspension of Senator Natasha, disregarding the court’s directive barring further inquiries by its ethics committee.
