Congolese Army Takes Responsibility for Malanga’s Death in Coup Attempt

The Congolese army has claimed responsibility for killing Christian Malanga, the leader of the failed coup in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The military also reported the arrest of around 50 individuals, including three American citizens.

Christian Malanga, an opposition leader in exile in the United States, was identified as the mastermind behind the attack on the Palais de la Nation.

The attempted coup resulted in the deaths of six people, including three assailants and their leader, Christian Malanga.

Early Sunday, Malanga posted a live video from inside the presidential palace on a Facebook account believed to be his. Surrounded by armed men, he issued threats against Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi.

Malanga, a 41-year-old former soldier from the Congolese diaspora, had lived in the United States for an extended period before running as an opposition candidate in the DRC’s 2011 legislative elections. He was arrested before the elections for his outspoken opposition to then-President Joseph Kabila.
