Ipswich, England — Nigerian-born striker Chuba Akpom has completed a season-long loan move to Sky Bet Championship club Ipswich Town from Eredivisie giants Ajax, marking his return to English football.
The 29-year-old forward spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 club Lille, where he scored three goals and provided one assist across 14 league appearances.
Akpom is the sixth signing for Ipswich Town during this summer’s transfer window as the Tractor Boys prepare for a competitive Championship campaign.
Expressing enthusiasm about his new challenge, Akpom told the club’s media outlet TownTV, “I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions. I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.”
He added, “I have had lots of good experiences over the last few years, at Ajax and playing in the Champions League with Lille, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now.”
Akpom concluded, “I’m here to do as much as I can to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch. I’ll bring a winning mentality here.”
This signing strengthens Ipswich’s attacking options as they aim to make an impact in the English Championship this season.
