Cholera vaccines set to be delivered in a few weeks, according to the federal government.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, has announced that the cholera vaccines expected by the nation will be delivered in a few weeks.
He revealed this information while speaking to journalists in Abuja. The vaccines have been ordered through the Global Vaccine Alliance and are set to be utilized in hotspot areas.
Prof. Pate emphasized that cholera is preventable through improved sanitation practices, the cessation of open defecation, and the elimination of water and food contamination.
President Bola Tinubu established a multi-sectoral cabinet committee, consisting of various ministries and state governments, to address the cholera outbreak. This committee has been working diligently, resulting in a significant reduction in reported cholera cases over the past four weeks.
Despite the progress made, Prof. Pate noted that it is premature to declare victory as the rainy season poses a continued risk of cholera outbreaks. Resources have been distributed to all states through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the emergency operations center to combat the disease effectively.
Cholera, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is a severe water-borne infection that spreads quickly in environments lacking proper sanitation and clean water. Its symptoms include vomiting, dehydration, and diarrhea.
The outbreak of cholera led to a state of emergency being declared in Lagos in June, with cases spreading to other states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), resulting in over 2,800 suspected cases and 82 deaths across 33 states, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
