China/ United States – The Chinese Embassy in the United States has issued a strong response to the latest round of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration over the ongoing fentanyl crisis. In a statement posted on X, the embassy emphasized that the US should engage in diplomatic negotiations instead of resorting to economic pressures.
“If the US truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, then the right thing to do is to consult with China by treating each other as equals. If war is what the US wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end,” the statement read.
China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the fentanyl issue as a pretext for the US to justify new tariffs on Chinese imports. A spokesperson for the ministry accused Washington of unfairly shifting blame onto China instead of addressing its own domestic drug crisis.
“The US, not anyone else, is responsible for the fentanyl crisis. Out of goodwill towards the American people, China has taken significant steps to help curb the problem. However, rather than acknowledging our efforts, the US has chosen to smear us, impose tariffs, and resort to blackmail. This will only harm our counternarcotics cooperation,” the statement continued.
The new tariffs, which add an additional 10% duty on Chinese goods, took effect on Tuesday, March 4. This move has heightened trade tensions, with China vowing to take necessary countermeasures. The Trump administration has defended the tariffs, stating that they are a response to China, Canada, and Mexico’s failure to curb the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals into the United States.
Trump, addressing Congress, confirmed that further tariffs would be introduced on April 2. He also promised to implement “reciprocal tariffs” and other trade restrictions to address long-standing trade imbalances.
“Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades, and now it’s our turn,” Trump said, referencing the high import duties imposed by China, India, the European Union, and other nations on US goods.
With tensions escalating, both economic and diplomatic relations between the US and China remain uncertain, leaving global markets and international trade dynamics on edge.
