Chelsea Left-Back Maatsen Joins Aston Villa for £35 Million

Aston Villa has signed Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for £35 million.

Maatsen, 22, spent the latter part of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, where he helped the team reach the Champions League final.

Currently with the Netherlands national team at Euro 2024, Maatsen is preparing for their last-16 match against Romania on Tuesday.

This acquisition is Villa’s second of the summer, following the signing of striker Lewis Dobbin from Everton.

Chelsea initially signed Maatsen from PSV Eindhoven in 2019. He has since impressed during loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Dortmund. highrevenuenetwork.com/9e9a5ee8183bdc3f8ca0807126145712/invoke.js

Maatsen played a key role in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, scoring four goals in 39 appearances and earning a place in the Championship Team of the Season.

Although Maatsen began the last campaign at Chelsea, he struggled to secure regular playing time under Mauricio Pochettino, making only 15 appearances across all competitions.

In January, Maatsen moved to Dortmund on a six-month loan after signing a one-year contract extension with Chelsea, which included a release clause anticipating his departure this summer.

While at Dortmund, Maatsen made 23 appearances and scored three goals, contributing to the team’s fifth-place Bundesliga finish and their journey to the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.
