Chaos Erupt at University of Abuja Over VC Selection Process

By Damilola Adeleke

The University of Abuja has been thrown into disarray as controversy surrounds the ongoing process to appoint a new vice-chancellor. The Governing Council, led by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita, announced interviews for December 30 and 31 to determine a permanent replacement.

At the center of the uproar is the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, whose candidacy has sparked debates. Despite being recognized as Nigeria’s youngest professor of law, concerns have been raised about her eligibility due to her limited three-year tenure as a professor. Critics have also alleged irregularities in the selection process, accusing the administration of bias toward Prof. Maikudi.

Tensions reached a boiling point during a recent Senate meeting when Professors Kasim Waziri and Rosemary Udeozo staged a walkout in protest against what they described as unfair criteria for the VC selection. Further controversy emerged as reports indicated that 40 candidates were shortlisted for interviews without adequate Senate consultation.

In a controversial move, Prof. Maikudi reportedly initiated changes to the joint selection board, replacing Prof. Waziri, and called for an extraordinary Senate meeting to solidify the decision. Following the brief meeting, an invitation was extended to the shortlisted candidates, with accommodations arranged at the Silver Green Hotel.

The interviews, to be held on the university’s main campus, require candidates to present their original credentials for evaluation.

With stakeholders sharply divided, the ongoing process has drawn widespread attention, adding a layer of complexity to the university’s leadership transition
