Reigning Nigerian champions Rangers International FC of Enugu secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sangada Esperenca FC of Angola in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, saw Rangers struggle to break through until the 78th minute when substitute Kazeem Ogunleye, a former Plateau United midfielder, scored the decisive goal.
Despite the win, no Nigerian team has reached the CAF Champions League group stage in the past two seasons. However, Rangers’ Head Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, remains confident that his team can secure their place in the lucrative group phase with a strong performance in the return leg in Luanda.
“It was a game we prepared well for, but I’m a bit disappointed with the way the players started. We missed several scoring opportunities,” Ilechukwu admitted. Despite the frustration, he emphasized the need to continue encouraging his players ahead of the crucial second leg.
The coach acknowledged the Angolan side’s quality, especially in their ability to resist Rangers’ attacks in the second half. “We are pleased with the 1-0 win, but we know we must score in Luanda, and anything can happen. Sangada Esperenca has players that can challenge us,” he said.
The return leg will be held in Luanda, Angola, on September 22, where Ilechukwu is counting on Ogunleye and a solid defensive performance to propel Rangers to the group stage of the competition.
