Renowned nonagenarian business magnate, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, lends his weighty support to the parliamentary system of government, deeming it the most favorable course of action for Nigeria. Having previously served as a parliamentarian during the First Republic, Dantata expressed his sentiments on Thursday as he welcomed a delegation of 60 House of Representatives members advocating a return to the parliamentary system.
Dantata envisions a prosperous future for Nigeria if the proposed system gains acceptance, criticizing the current presidential system as both unwieldy and economically burdensome. He asserted, “Things are not working, the country is stagnant, and the citizens are not enjoying anything out of it, so there should be serious moves to adopt the parliamentary system for Nigeria to regain its greatness.”
Cautioning the legislators championing the parliamentary cause, Dantata urged them to remain vigilant against personal interests that might undermine the noble intent.
Leader of the delegation, Kingsley Chinda, representing PDP from Rivers State, echoed Dantata’s sentiments, highlighting the exorbitant costs and complexities associated with the existing presidential system. Chinda emphasized the advantage of a Prime Minister chosen from the National Assembly, asserting that any deviation could be promptly addressed by fellow members.
In a plea to Nigerians and the media, Chinda called for widespread support for the transition to the parliamentary system of government. The move is portrayed as a strategic shift towards a more manageable and responsive governance structure.
