BRGIE reports 30 million votes cast in Biafra self-referendum

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has made a claim that over 30 million Biafrans participated in a self-referendum.

This claim was made by Mr. Simon Ekpa, the Prime Minister of BRGIE, through an official statement released on Thursday. The statement highlighted the enthusiasm shown by Biafrans in embracing both E-voting and physical voting methods as demonstrations of their desire for liberation.

According to Ekpa, the number of Biafrans who participated in the self-referendum within the last four months exceeded the total number of voters in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. The voting process reportedly began in February and concluded on May 30. Additionally, BRGIE announced that the subsequent stages two and three of the Biafra Liberation are scheduled to commence in June and continue until November 28, 2024.

BRGIE has cited issues such as marginalization, underdevelopment, insecurity, and poverty in the Southeast region of Nigeria as reasons justifying the call for a self-referendum. The group believes that the substantial number of votes recorded during the self-referendum indicates the readiness of Biafrans to secede from Nigeria, following decades of perceived marginalization.

It is essential to recognize that claims such as these may be contentious and subject to interpretation. The process and legitimacy of the self-referendum claimed by BRGIE may be viewed differently by various stakeholders and authorities.
