BREAKING: NFF Appoints Eric Chelle as New Eagles Head Coach

Abuja, Nigeria  — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the endorsement of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee’s recommendation.

The decision, ratified by the NFF Executive Committee on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, comes after a meeting held in Abuja. Chelle, a former coach of Mali’s senior men’s national team, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Chelle, 47, earned five caps as a player for the Aiglons of Mali and has previously coached clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. As Mali’s Head Coach since 2022, he led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, narrowly losing 2-1 to the hosts and eventual champions after extra time.

During his playing career, Chelle featured for French clubs including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.

Chelle’s appointment takes immediate effect, with the critical task of securing the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The next round of qualifiers, Matchdays 5 and 6, is scheduled for March.
