Lawmakers intensify pressure for a thorough investigation into the Nigerian Air Force Base in Markudi and the joint military security task force in Benue State following their alleged failure to promptly respond to distress calls during a devastating attack in Gwer West Local Government Area on March 7, resulting in the tragic loss of over forty lives.
In a compelling motion of urgent public importance, Mr. Austin Achado, representing Gwer East, Gwer West Federal Constituency of Benue State, disclosed to the House that, during the three-hour assault, no security agencies extended assistance to the victims despite desperate distress calls.
Significantly, the House underscored the proximity of the Nigerian Air Force base in Markudi, less than 30 kilometers from the besieged community, emphasizing its failure to counter the attackers in response to distress calls.
Achado further revealed that security personnel arrived a staggering 20 hours after the assailants had departed, prompting growing concerns about the delayed response.
In a decisive move, the House called upon the Joint Military Security Task Force in Benue State to launch and coordinate extensive operations to eradicate bandits and criminal groups, ensuring the restoration of peace for farming activities in the affected areas and the entirety of Benue State.
Additionally, the House directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly dispatch relief materials to the afflicted communities, alleviating the hardships faced by the victims.
With a commitment to transparency, the House mandated its committees on defense and police affairs to scrutinize the deplorable conditions contributing to the attacks in various communities across Benue State.
