A passenger plane carrying 67 individuals from Azerbaijan to Russia has crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning, involving an Embraer 190 aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, the plane, which was en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechen region, was discovered engulfed in flames approximately three kilometers (1.8 miles) from Aktau.
“Rescue teams promptly commenced fire extinguishing efforts. Preliminary reports indicate there are survivors, but details about the victims are still being verified,” the ministry disclosed in an official statement.
The aircraft reportedly carried 62 passengers and five crew members, as noted in a preliminary report by Kazakhstan’s transport ministry.
Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed the flight, designated J2-8243, had made an emergency landing near Aktau. “Further updates regarding the incident will be shared with the public,” the airline stated via its official Facebook page.
