Borno – The Borno State Executive Council has approved the renaming of Borno State University (BOSU) to Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri, in honor of Sir Kashim Ibrahim, the first Governor of Northern Nigeria.
The decision was announced during the first council meeting of 2025 chaired by Governor Babagana Zulum.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, highlighted the significance of the renaming.
“Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University. This is a tribute to Sir Kashim Ibrahim’s immense contributions as the first Governor of Northern Nigeria and his enduring legacy in leadership and governance,” Tar stated.
He added that the renaming process will take effect after necessary legislative amendments and formal notifications to regulatory authorities.

“This decision is subject to legislative processes by the State Assembly to amend the law establishing the university. Additionally, the Ministry of Education will notify relevant bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),” he explained.
