Borno Resettled Communities Without Security – Lawan

Abdulkarim Lawan, the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, has expressed serious concerns over the lack of security in several resettled communities in Northern Borno.

Speaking at the 2024 Democracy Day celebration in Maiduguri, Lawan highlighted the military’s abandonment of Guzamala LGA, leaving residents unable to return to their ancestral homes after 15 years of insurgency due to the absence of security forces.

Lawan pointed out that, aside from Monguno town, all other resettled communities lack any form of security or military presence, rendering them vulnerable to attacks. He urgently called on the government to rebuild and resettle residents of Guzamala.

He expressed particular concern over the sparse human presence in Guzamala LGA, Kukawa town, and other communities displaced by Boko Haram terrorists. Lawan attributed this to the continued absence of military presence, despite the persistent threats and significant terrorist activity in these areas.

He noted that displaced persons from the LGA participated in the 2023 general election from IDP camps. Those resettled from camps in Maiduguri still ended up in other IDP camps in Lagos, as they could not return home.

Lawan warned that neglecting Guzamala and Kukawa, as well as other affected communities, would hinder efforts to restore security in the state and make these areas more susceptible to terrorist attacks.

In response, Usman Kadafur, the state’s acting governor, directed the state commissioner for local government and emirate affairs, Sugun Mele, to initiate the reconstruction of Gudumbali, the headquarters of Guzamala LGA, to facilitate the possible return of its inhabitants.

Borno State has been severely impacted by Boko Haram insurgency, with the militants engaging in widespread violence, including killings, abductions, and sexual assaults.
