Bama, Borno State— At least 61 people, including soldiers and civilians, lost their lives following coordinated attacks by Boko Haram insurgents on Friday night in Darul Jamal, a community within Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to eyewitnesses, the insurgents launched the assault around 9 p.m. and continued their operation until dawn. The heavily armed terrorists targeted unsuspecting residents and travelers, leaving widespread devastation in their wake.
Locals confirmed that the victims included resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) hosted at the Government Science Secondary School IDP Camp. “At least 56 civilians and five soldiers were killed. Although the exact figure remains unclear, the casualties are believed to exceed 50,” a source disclosed.
The attackers also razed over 20 houses and destroyed 10 buses, worsening the humanitarian situation for the already displaced population. Several residents remain unaccounted for, sparking fears that the death toll may rise further.
Security sources noted that Nigerian troops engaged the insurgents during the assault but also suffered losses. However, both the military and the police are yet to issue official statements regarding the incident.
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, visited Bama on Saturday to assess the situation and commiserate with survivors. His visit underscores the gravity of the attack, which has once again exposed the vulnerability of communities recently resettled after years of displacement.
It will be recalled that Bama Local Government was previously one of the major strongholds of Boko Haram. In 2004, the terrorists captured and declared it part of their caliphate before the Nigerian military reclaimed the area. Despite such gains, recent attacks highlight the persistent threat posed by the insurgency.
The fresh assault has reignited concerns about the safety of resettled IDPs and the capacity of security agencies to prevent recurring violence. Residents have appealed for stronger protection measures to prevent further bloodshed and displacement.
