Gummi, Zamfara State — At least 15 people died and three others remain missing after a boat capsized while villagers from Danmaga, Tungar Maigunya, Nasarawar Kifi, and neighboring communities tried to flee a bandit attack.
The overcrowded canoe, with a capacity of 16 passengers, capsized when two women forcibly boarded during the third trip, causing panic and eventual overturn.
Eyewitness Malam Bashiru Gago Yan Kifi described how residents, escaping marauding gunmen, took great risks crossing the river daily for farming and trade due to lack of safe transport.
Rescue efforts recovered 15 bodies so far, and search continues for the missing. The victims were buried after funeral prayers led by local religious leaders.
Zamfara government spokesperson Sulaiman Bala Idris confirmed the tragedy and announced relief efforts, while Governor Dauda Lawal called on agencies to support affected families.
The accident highlights the dual challenges of insecurity and inadequate infrastructure facing rural communities in Zamfara amid ongoing banditry.
Villagers often cross rivers without safety jackets, increasing the risks during such emergencies.
