Blackout as Union Shuts Down National Grid

Amid the ongoing nationwide strike, the Labour Union has shut down the national grid, resulting in a widespread blackout across the country.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the development in a press statement signed by General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

According to the statement, the national grid was shut down around 2:19 a.m. on June 3, 2024.

“At about 1:15 a.m. this morning, the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were forced out of the control room. Staff who resisted were beaten and some were injured during the incident. Consequently, the Benin Area Control Center was completely shut down,” the statement read.

The Labour Union also shut down other transmission substations, including Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba, and Osogbo. Some transmission lines were also opened due to the union’s actions.

On the power generation side, several generating units were forced to shut down. At the Jebba Generating Station, one unit was shut down, followed by three others due to high frequency and system instability, leading to the national grid’s collapse at 2:19 a.m.

“At about 3:23 a.m., TCN began grid recovery efforts, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. However, the Labour Union continues to obstruct grid recovery efforts nationwide,” the statement noted.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria assured that efforts are ongoing to recover and stabilize the grid to restore normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centers nationwide.
