Bishop Ajang Advocates Responsible Use of AI

The Catholic Bishop of Lafia Diocese, David Ajang, has delivered a cautionary message urging Nigerians to uphold human values while integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies into daily life. Speaking during a homily at St. John Catholic Church in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, Bishop Ajang emphasized the importance of maintaining humanity in the face of rapid technological advancement.

Bishop Ajang’s remarks came during the conclusion of the weeklong ComWeek, held to mark the 58th World Communications Day. He warned against the uncritical adoption of AI, stressing that while AI has the potential to transform society, it should never replace human beings. Instead, he urged for its usage with transparency and empathy.

This year’s theme, ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart: for a fully human communication,’ underscores the need for discernment amidst technological progress. Bishop Ajang highlighted the necessity for people to distinguish between the excitement of innovation and the potential pitfalls, advocating for prudent and cautious approaches.

In his address, Bishop Ajang reiterated that while AI can facilitate community building when deployed judiciously, it remains subordinate to divine wisdom and human stewardship. Father Michael Nsikak Umoh, the National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, echoed these sentiments, urging the media to play a role in educating society on the responsible use of AI.

Moreover, Father Umoh emphasized the importance of media literacy in navigating the evolving landscape of communication technologies. World Communications Day, observed annually on the 7th Sunday of Easter, was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 to underscore the pivotal role of media, as recognized during the Second Vatican Council. Each year, the Pope’s message reflects on the progress and challenges posed by media, underscoring the need for responsible and ethical communication practices.
