Biden to Netanyahu: US Declines Participation in Israeli Response to Iran

President Joe Biden has cautioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States will abstain from engaging in a retaliatory campaign against Iran.

Netanyahu’s war cabinet leans towards retaliatory measures in the wake of a significant drone and missile assault by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Israeli soil.

The looming prospect of direct conflict between the perennial Middle Eastern adversaries, potentially entangling the United States, has heightened regional tensions, prompting calls for restraint from global powers and Arab states.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin engaged counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, advocating for de-escalation, stressing the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts, and reaffirming unwavering support for Israel’s defense.

Saturday’s drone and missile barrage, allegedly in response to an Israeli strike on Iran’s embassy compound in Syria, marked a deadly escalation following months of skirmishes between Israel and Iran’s regional proxies, spurred by the Gaza conflict.

While Netanyahu’s war cabinet leans towards retaliation, internal divisions persist regarding the timing and magnitude of such a response.

Israeli officials, however, signal that immediate retaliation isn’t imminent and assert Israel’s reluctance to act unilaterally.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, underscores the opportunity for strategic alliances against Iran’s perceived threat.

Despite maintaining vigilance, Israel has eased some emergency protocols, including restrictions on school activities and large gatherings.

Iran’s Chief of Staff, Major-General Mohammad Bagheri, warns of a significant escalation if Israel retaliates, cautioning against US involvement by threatening potential attacks on American bases.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, informs the US that any attack on Israel will be limited and defensive in nature, with regional neighbors forewarned of impending strikes 72 hours in advance.
